our history

The Symphonic Chamber Orchestra Berlin was founded in 2019 by Michael Netzker, Thomas Hahn, Philippe Perotto, and Thorsten Putscher. The central idea was to create a flexible ensemble characterized by a chamber music style that suits both classical-romantic and contemporary works. Leading musicians from Berlin's orchestra scene quickly joined and supported the concept. The orchestra debuted in December 2019 at Herz Jesu Church in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg. More concerts were planned for 2020 but were mostly canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite the challenges, the orchestra performed chamber music concerts in 2020 and organized a benefit concert under the patronage of former Bundestag President Wolfgang Thierse to support a homeless shelter in Berlin. The orchestra resumed activities in summer 2021, presenting its own programs and collaborating with leading choirs such as the Max Reger Choir Berlin.

In the "Beethoven+" concert series, the ensemble juxtaposes Beethoven's symphonies with works by contemporary composers. The orchestra has commissioned four compositions and premiered six works. Today, it performs in renowned concert halls in Berlin, including the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie, while also exploring less conventional venues. Besides its artistic pursuits, the orchestra is involved in educational programs at several Berlin schools. In the 2024/2025 season, the orchestra will present a three-part concert series at the Berlin Philharmonie.

Orchestra Management

The orchestra is voluntarily led by a motivated team of three. Principal trumpeter Michael Netzker serves as the managing director, principal flutist Thomas Hahn is responsible for finance and accounting, and Thorsten Putscher acts as the artistic director. Together, they form the board of the Symphonic Chamber Orchestra Berlin e.V. The board is supported by dedicated ensemble members and friends in many musical and non-musical tasks.
